With over 900 members and strong ties to some of the biggest law firms in the world, the University of Nottingham’s Law Society (affectionately known as “LawSoc”) is one of the largest and most active student societies across the UK.
We aim for excellence in everything we undertake so that our members get the best out of their membership. Over the last few years we have been awarded the three most prestigious accolades by the Students’ Union: starting with the “Best Society” award, followed by “Best Departmental Society” alongside winning the “Activities Officer’s Award” two years in a row. We consistently strive to better ourselves, and over the last two years we have branched into new ventures by being awarded “Best Welfare and Inclusivity Award” in 2015 and 2016, the “Best Entrepreneurial Initiative” for our Book Sale, as well as the “Best Academic Experience” in recognition of our services and dedication to the students of the School of Law.
Our society has an impressive and resourceful relationship with our fellow law affiliated societies, that of Pro Bono, the Bar Society and Negotiation Society so that our members can experience a manner of legal activities such as mooting, debating, and Pro Bono projects, namely Unbarred and Aspire (which are community based).
LawSoc offers an unparalleled careers service for both Law and Non-Law students, organising and promoting presentations, workshops and networking events throughout the year with many of the world’s top law firms. With weekly careers newsletters and exclusive opportunities ranging from “Member Only” open days to application workshops, LawSoc members are given invaluable guidance and intimate exposure to some of the most reputable employers in the legal field from the moment they commence their studies. LawSoc careers opportunities are ever expanding – in 2017 LawSoc held the largest networking event within the Law School, being recognised nationally as the “Best Careers Event 2017”at the LawCareers.Net Law Society Awards for our infamous“Dinner with the City”networking evening. This year we have secured a total of 20 international law firms to attend, be sure to secure your place!
A project we are most proud of is our promotion of student well being and welfare on campus. Over the last two years, we have piloted the university’s first ever “Wellness Week”, aimed at promoting good mental health among students and empowering those who may be struggling to seek support. Activities ranged from yoga to self-hypnosis, with the undoubted highlight of the week being LawSoc’s very own Puppy Room, in collaboration with Guide Dogs Nottingham. During the past three years, over 2500 students have visited our Puppy Room, raising approximately £10,000 to ensure the invaluable work Guide Dogs carry out in our local community can be continued.
Don’t fear, here at LawSoc we like to have fun too! The society has some of the best and most competitive sports teams on campus. With rugby, hockey, netball, basketball and football teams, the red and black of LawSoc truly is a force to be reckoned with on a Sunday morning! Additionally, thanks to its kind sponsors, the Law Society is able to provide the biggest and most renowned socials on campus. From termly river cruises, to grand evening balls and even our annual theatre trip we provide the perfect opportunity to relax alongside your degree. As an added bonus, our membership cards entitle holders to more discounts than any other university society; from bars to restaurants to clubs, LawSoc makes everything a little better and a little more affordable for a student budget!
The 2016 - 2017 year was an unforgettable one for the society; our balls were bigger than ever before with theme parks rides and live fire eating dancers, whilst our careers’ service excelled with our pinnacle careers’ event Dinner in the City. However, I and the rest of our committee have ensured that the 2017 - 2018 year is the most promising one yet! We have new sponsors, networking opportunities, socials and sporting activities for our members, whilst ensuring that a support system is maintained with a revamp of our Parenting and Adoption scheme.
Becoming a member of LawSoc is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a student at the University of Nottingham. You’ll find it’s the perfect way to get some breathing space from your degree and to spend time with your fellow peers. Remember to join our Facebook group “University of Nottingham Law Society 2017/2018”, like our page “University of Nottingham Law Society”, follow us on Twitter (@UoN_LawSoc), or Instagram (@uonlawsoc) to stay in the loop. From myself and the rest of the LawSoc committee, I wish you a very warm welcome and every success in your degree. Good luck to each and every one of you, and enjoy your time reading Law and the University of Nottingham!
